GroupFinds

The levelling system, explained

What earns XP, how levels follow from it, what the owner can change, and what happens to XP when somebody stops turning up. Every window, reward and threshold on this page belongs to the server owner, so this describes the mechanism rather than printing a number that is wrong for everybody who chose differently.

What earns XP

Messages. A member earns XP for sending a message, with a cooldown so a burst of messages does not pay more than a conversation. The bot never reads what a message says — it does not request the Message Content intent, so Discord does not send it the text at all. It counts that a message happened.

Time in voice. A member earns XP for the minutes they are actually in a voice channel. This is the part most levelling setups leave out, and it is the one that reflects who is really in the room.

Big Actions. XP and roles for a member who boosts the server, set on the dashboard. The other Big Actions, which need members to send proof, are not active yet.

What the owner controls

  • Level roles. Pick a role and the level that earns it. The bot hands it out and can take it back if XP falls below the threshold again.
  • Multipliers. Raise what a channel, a day of the week, a date or an event is worth.
  • Decay. XP falls for members who stop turning up, on the owner’s schedule, with a preview that shows exactly who would be affected before anything runs.
  • Penalties. XP is removed on a timeout, scaled to how long the timeout lasted, and can be removed when somebody leaves or is banned.
  • Seasons. Reset the leaderboard on a schedule, keep the all-time one, and give the season’s winner a role.
  • Announcements. Where level-ups are posted, whether they are posted at all, and whether the card carries the GroupFinds line.

All of it is free, and all of it is set either on the dashboard or with /gf-setup in Discord. Both read the same settings, so they cannot disagree.

Moving from another levelling bot

You do not have to start your members at zero. Run /gf-migrate in your server: it reads levels from MEE6 when its leaderboard is public, and from your own level roles for any other bot, Arcane included, so people keep the standing they earned.

It shows a preview before it writes anything, and the whole import can be undone for seven days. The server owner or an Administrator runs it. How bringing your levels over works.

Invite rewards

An invite can pay the member who made it three times: when somebody arrives, again if that person is still in the server after the owner’s stay window, and again the first time that person is in a voice call. Which of the three pay, and how much, is the owner’s choice.

The member who brought somebody also answers for them: if a person they invited is banned, kicked or timed out soon after arriving, that counts against the inviter, and enough of those pauses their ability to make new links until a moderator clears it. A member leaving of their own accord is never a strike.

Why a permission is needed: to reward the member who invited someone, GroupFinds has to know which invite link each new member used. Discord only shows a bot that when its role has the Manage Server permission. GroupFinds does not ask for it when it is added.

What it does not do: GroupFinds uses it only to look at your invite links and how many times each one was used. It never uses it to change your server name, icon, channels, roles or settings, or to make or delete invite links. Manage Server does not let a bot ban, kick or time out anyone.

How to give it: open Server Settings, then Roles, then the GroupFinds role, turn on Manage Server, and press Save Changes. Turn it off the same way whenever you like.
