Getting Started with Groupfinds
How to Add the Groupfinds Bot
Adding Groupfinds to your Discord server is quick and easy:
Step 1: Click any "Add the bot" button on our website, or open https://www.groupfinds.com/add?src=website&page=help
Step 2: Select the server you want to add the bot to from the dropdown.
Step 3: Review and accept the five permissions it asks for:
- See channels - Lets GroupFinds notice who is chatting and who is in a voice channel, so members earn XP.
- Send messages - Lets GroupFinds post the one message it sends when it arrives, and anything you switch on afterwards, such as a weekly card in the channel you choose. Nothing is posted in your server unless you turn it on.
- Read message history - Lets GroupFinds count the last 30 days of messages once, right after you add it, so your leaderboard is not empty on day one. It never keeps what anyone wrote.
- Manage roles - Lets GroupFinds hand out the roles you pick when members reach a level, and only roles below its own.
- Connect to voice channels - Discord treats a voice channel a bot cannot join as invisible to it, including the text chat inside it. GroupFinds never joins a call and never records audio; without this it simply cannot post or see anything in a voice channel.
Other permissions are only for features you turn on later (Attach files, Ban members, Manage server, Mute members, Deafen members, Move members, Create invite). GroupFinds tells you when one is needed, with a one-step link.
Step 4: Click "Authorize" to complete the setup.
The bot will now appear in your server and begin tracking XP immediately!

How XP Works
Understanding the XP system:
Text XP:
- Earned by sending messages
- Default: 15-25 XP per message
- 60-second cooldown between XP gains (configurable)
- Reply bonus: extra XP for the member who sends a reply (optional, off by default)
- Reaction bonus: extra XP for a message's author each time someone else reacts to it (optional, off by default)
Voice XP:
- Earned for each minute spent in a voice channel
- Default: 2 XP per minute
- Counted whether or not the member is muted, and even when they are alone in the channel
Text and Voice Weights:
- Set how much text and voice count, each from 0 to 100%, adding up to 100%
- Example: 70% text, 30% voice
- Customize based on your community type
Excluded Channels:
- Select channels where XP is not earned
- Useful for bot-spam or off-topic channels
Level Curve:
Level = floor(√(XP ÷ 100)) + 1. The curve is the same in every server.
- Level 2 at 100 XP
- Level 3 at 400 XP
- Level 4 at 900 XP
- Level 5 at 1,600 XP
- Level 10 at 8,100 XP
Setting Up Role Rewards
Reward members with roles as they level up:
Creating Role Rewards:
- Go to Dashboard → Leveling → Role Rewards
- Click "Add Role Reward"
- Select the level (e.g., Level 5)
- Choose the role(s) to award (admin roles are filtered out)
- Save your changes
Options:
- Keep previous roles: Members keep all earned roles
- Remove previous: Only the highest role remains (toggle in settings)
- Multiple roles per level: Award several roles at once
Tips:
- Create meaningful milestones (5, 10, 25, 50, 100)
- Use exclusive colors for high-level roles
- Consider channel access rewards
- Avoid assigning admin/mod roles automatically
XP Multipliers
Boost XP earnings in specific situations:
Channel Multipliers:
- Set 1x-10x XP for specific channels
- Great for promoting certain activities
- When several multipliers apply at once, the total is capped at 5x
Empty VC Bonus:
- Extra XP when few people in voice
- Encourages voice channel usage
Event Attendance:
- Bonus XP during scheduled events
- Rewards active participants
Day and Date Multipliers:
- Boost XP on a day of the week or a specific date, optionally between set times (UTC)
- Perfect for special occasions
Level-Up Announcements
Celebrate member achievements:
Announcement Options:
- Posted in the channel you pick, or in the channel where the member was chatting if you pick none
- Or switched off
- Never sent as a direct message
Customizing Messages:
Use placeholders:
- {user} - Mentions the member
- {level} - New level reached
If the member earned a role at that level, an "Earned:" line naming it is added under your message (you can switch that off).
Example:
"🎉 Congratulations {user}! You reached Level {level}!"
Leaderboard Seasons

Public Web Leaderboard:

XP Decay
Keep members active with XP decay:
How It Works:
- Inactive members lose XP over time
- Configurable percentage and frequency
- Exempt specific roles (mods, VIPs)
- Set a minimum XP floor (never go below)
Settings:
- Days of inactivity before decay starts
- Percentage or a flat amount lost per decay period
- Decay frequency (daily, weekly or monthly)
- Minimum XP floor
- Exempt roles selection
Members are not sent a message when they lose XP.
Use Cases:
- Prevent "ghost" high-level members
- Encourage ongoing participation
- Maintain accurate leaderboards
- Reward consistent activity over time
Timeout Penalties
Penalize rule-breakers by deducting XP when they receive timeouts:
How It Works:
- When a user receives a Discord timeout, XP is deducted
- Configurable penalty tiers based on duration
- Helps discourage repeated rule violations
Settings:
- Enable/disable timeout penalties
- Set XP penalty per timeout tier
- Configure different penalties for short vs long timeouts
Benefits:
- Adds consequences beyond the timeout itself
- Encourages better behavior
- Keeps leaderboards fair
Invite Rewards
Reward members who grow your community. Invite rewards are optional and stay off until you turn them on.
The permission they need:
Why a permission is needed: to reward the member who invited someone, GroupFinds has to know which invite link each new member used. Discord only shows a bot that when its role has the Manage Server permission. GroupFinds does not ask for it when it is added.
What it does not do: GroupFinds uses it only to look at your invite links and how many times each one was used. It never uses it to change your server name, icon, channels, roles or settings, or to make or delete invite links. Manage Server does not let a bot ban, kick or time out anyone.
How to give it: open Server Settings, then Roles, then the GroupFinds role, turn on Manage Server, and press Save Changes. Turn it off the same way whenever you like.
Setting Up:
- Give the GroupFinds role the Manage Server permission, as above
- Turn on invite rewards (in Discord with /gf-setup, or on the dashboard)
- Set how many days a new member must stay (default: 7)
- Create reward tiers
Validation:
- Invites only count after new members stay
- Prevents invite gaming
- Tracks valid vs invalid invites
Reward Tiers:
- 5 invites → 500 XP
- 10 invites → 1,000 XP + Recruiter role
- 25 invites → 3,000 XP + Top Recruiter role
Notifications:
- Optional: a shoutout in a channel you pick when a member reaches a reward tier
- Members are not sent direct messages about their invites

Weekly Recap and Owner Report
What GroupFinds sends each week:
The weekly recap (in your server):
- One post a week in one channel: who showed up, who moved up, and the busiest room
- On by default; the server owner or an Administrator can change the channel or switch it off with /gf-setup
The owner's weekly report:
- A direct message to the server owner with the server's week
- If the owner's direct messages are closed, it goes to the recap channel instead
The dashboard's separate Weekly Digest switch is not used by the bot yet.

Frequently asked questions
General
- Is Groupfinds really free?
- Yes. Every feature of the GroupFinds bot is free, including XP multipliers, XP decay, automation rules and your server's full analytics. No credit card required.
- How is Groupfinds different from MEE6?
- Groupfinds offers voice XP and role rewards for free (MEE6 charges). We also include deep analytics and server directory listing. We don't spam your members with sales prompts.
- Can I use Groupfinds with other bots?
- Yes! Groupfinds works alongside other bots. We recommend disabling leveling on your old bot to avoid confusion, but there's no technical conflict.
Leveling
- How fast do members level up?
- By default, members earn 15-25 XP per message (at most once a minute) and 2 XP per minute in voice. Level 2 comes at 100 XP, level 5 at 1,600 and level 10 at 8,100. You can change the text and voice weights to shift the balance.
- Do members lose XP when they leave?
- Not by default: XP is kept if they rejoin. The owner can switch on a reset to zero when a member leaves or is kicked, and a separate reset when a member is banned.
Technical
- What permissions does the bot need?
- Asked for when you add it: See channels, Send messages, Read message history, Manage roles, Connect to voice channels. Only if you turn the feature on: Attach files, Ban members, Manage server, Mute members, Deafen members, Move members, Create invite. Turning one of those on shows a one-step link to add it. Adding the bot to a server needs Manage Server in Discord.
- Why isn't the bot responding?
- Check: 1) The bot has the permissions it asked for 2) Commands are not disabled in that channel 3) Try /gf-help, or /gf-status if you are staff
- How do I report a bug?
- Ask in the GroupFinds Discord server, or email support@groupfinds.com with details about the issue.
